Have you ever wondered why male infertility myths persist despite modern medical advancements? It’s intriguing how misconceptions endure, even when science presents the facts. Infertility is not solely a woman’s issue, yet many still believe so. As a follow-up to our earlier blog on facts and myths about infertility, we are here to further clear the confusion by debunking common misconceptions, addressing the false notion that women are always at fault, and shedding light on the truth about male infertility. Let’s explore and uncover the facts.

Myth 1: Infertility Is Exclusively a Woman’s Issue

In India, infertility is often mistakenly seen as solely a woman’s issue. However, according to the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), 40% of infertility cases are due to male factors, another 40% to female factors and 20% from unexplained causes or both partners.

Male infertility usually results from low sperm count, poor motility or hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately, the stigma disproportionately affects women, leading men to avoid seeking help. Addressing the health of both partners is essential when trying to conceive.

Myth 2: Age Doesn’t Affect Male Fertility

Many believe men can father children at any age without difficulty. While men remain fertile longer than women, age still matters. Male fertility declines significantly after 40, with reduced sperm quality and a higher risk of genetic mutations. A study conducted by us on nearly 7000 Indian males found that after 36 years of age, the sperm DNA integrity significantly reduces.

Delayed parenthood may lead to complications, including increased miscarriage risk and congenital disabilities. Men planning late fatherhood should consider how age impacts their chances of successful conception and the health of the offspring.

Myth 3: Conception Is Easy After Marriage

In India, marriage is often viewed as a guaranteed path to parenthood, with the expectation of quick conception. However, conception depends on various biological and medical factors and it is normal for healthy couples to take up to a year to conceive naturally.

Factors like irregular ovulation, low sperm count, stress, lifestyle habits and health issues can impact fertility. If a couple has been trying to conceive for more than a year without success, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a male infertility test and other diagnostic procedures.

Myth 4: Stress Alone Causes Infertility

Stress is often unfairly blamed as the primary cause of infertility. While chronic stress can negatively impact hormonal balance, it rarely acts as the sole culprit. Many couples are told to “just relax” as a solution, which oversimplifies the problem.

Addressing stress alone will not resolve underlying medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), blocked fallopian tubes or male infertility factors. While stress management is essential for overall well-being, it must be complemented by a thorough medical evaluation to identify the real cause of infertility.

Myth 5: Home Remedies Alone Can Fully Resolve Infertility

Traditional remedies are popular in Indian culture, and while some natural treatments may support reproductive health, they are not a complete solution. Herbal remedies may offer benefits but cannot replace medical interventions like IVF or hormone therapy in severe cases.

Combining lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments and modern fertility treatments can significantly improve conception chances. Always consult a fertility specialist before relying solely on alternative remedies.

Myth 6: IVF and Fertility Treatments Guarantee Pregnancy

India has advanced significantly in fertility treatments, but it is a myth that IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) guarantee success. IVF improves conception chances, but outcomes depend on factors like the age of the woman, egg and sperm quality and medical conditions.

The average success rate of IVF in India ranges from 20% to 45% per cycle. Therefore, it’s crucial to have realistic expectations and understand that multiple attempts may be needed.

Myth 7: High Testosterone Levels Mean Higher Fertility

Another misconception is that high testosterone equals higher fertility. In reality, abnormally high testosterone levels, especially from supplements, can actually reduce sperm production. Maintaining a hormonal balance is vital, and self-medicating with testosterone boosters can be detrimental.

We recommend professional hormonal evaluations to determine the best course of action when dealing with fertility issues.  We offer blood and hormone testing, besides other tests dealing with male infertility.

Myth 8: Infertility Is Permanent

A common belief is that  infertility is irreversible, but most male infertility cases are treatable, especially with early diagnosis. Treatments may involve lifestyle changes, medication, surgery or assisted reproductive techniques.

We are the only lab in India authorised to conduct the Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay (SCSA®) test for DFI, a vital tool for detecting sperm DNA fragmentation. Early identification significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

Myth 9: Tight Underwear Causes Infertility

While tight underwear may raise scrotal temperature slightly, its impact on fertility is often exaggerated. Factors like smoking, alcohol consumption and poor diet have a much more significant effect on sperm health. Choosing comfortable and breathable clothing is recommended, but it is not a major factor in fertility.

Myth 10: Frequent Masturbation Reduces Sperm Count

Many believe that frequent masturbation drastically lowers sperm count, but this is not entirely accurate. While frequent ejaculation might temporarily reduce sperm volume, it does not impact fertility in the long run. Maintaining a regular pattern does not hinder reproductive capabilities.
