Project Description
Andrology Blood Test, Andrology panel test 1, 2
Blood tests
A very intrinsic part of our body is the circulatory system consisting of blood. A normal adult has about 5 liters of blood in the body. A healthy body requires the right blood circulation which helps in supplying oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body and removal of waste products in some cases as well. In case of any ailment, doctors suggest some tests to be conducted and blood tests are the preliminary clinical investigation. Blood tests also play a vital role in assessing the reproductive health of a male or female.
Types of blood tests
There are different types of blood tests that are carried out to check various parameters of the patient. The most common tests that are done to assess the male reproductive health condition are serological tests and hormone assays.
Serological tests
Serological tests are a set of clinical tests that are used to identify the antibodies present in the blood after encountering an infection. Such blood tests are used to identify and check if the patient has any particular viral infections that might affect his reproductive ability. Viral infections like HIV, HBSAg are some of the regular checks that are done during blood analysis of a male.
- HIV – Human Immunodeficiency virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
- HCV – Hepatitis C virus causes, Hepatitis, a disease condition where the liver becomes enlarged. Hepatitis has been found to cause infertility in male by interfering in the spermatogenesis (secretion of sperm).
- VDRL – Venereal Disease Research Laboratory Test which is done to check for the Sexually transmitted disease (STD) called SYPHILIS caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum.
- HBSAg – Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the virus. The blood samples will be checked for the presence of antigen in the patients.
These above mentioned tests are done with the blood sample of the patient and based upon the blood test results; the patient is advised to undergo treatment for the particular viral or bacterial infection.
Hormone assays
Another very important type of blood test is the hormone analysis. As hormones play a significant role in the regulation of the reproduction process, it becomes essential to evaluate the hormonal status of the patient in question, to assess his reproductive health.
Sperm production is regulated by hormones in both the male and female and blood tests reveal the normal or abnormal levels of the reproductive hormones. The hormones that are usually tested are
- Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Luteinizing hormone (LH)
- Testosterone
FSH is responsible for the stimulation of spermatogenesis in males and is a very important reproductive hormone.
LH is the hormone that attaches to the Leydig cells in the male testes and aids in the production of testosterone.
For hormone assays, the blood sample is collected from the patient and analyzed in the laboratory.
FSH and LH blood tests
This test reveals conditions like:
- Low or no sperm count
- Testes dysfunction
- Reproductive inability and may be helpful in identifying the cause of infertility in male
Testosterone
Blood tests are also done to determine the level of testosterone as it helps in the diagnosis of male infertility and erectile dysfunction. Improper production of testosterone also causes decreased sex drive in male.
Blood analysis results
After the blood tests, doctors compare the blood tests normal ranges with the patient’s result. The blood analysis results are carefully scrutinized to infer a proper course of treatment for the individual. These blood tests play a crucial role as they assist in identifying the cause of male infertility, be it due to an infectious disease or hormonal imbalance.
